Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Each grade is converted to a point value (an A is usually 4.0, a B is 3.0, and so on), multiplied by the credit hours for that course, then all those totals are added up and divided by your total credit hours. This calculator does that math for you automatically.

Does this match my school's official GPA?

This uses the standard 4.0 scale used by most schools, but some institutions use slightly different scales or weight honors and AP classes differently. Check with your school's registrar if you need an official figure.

What if a class has a plus or minus grade?

Plus and minus grades are included in the dropdown (like A- or B+), each with their own standard point value, so you don't need to convert anything manually.

Can I calculate GPA for just one semester?

Yes — just add the courses and credits for that semester only. Add all your courses across every semester instead if you want your cumulative GPA.

How does the "what GPA do I need" tool work?

It works backward from your goal. Enter your current cumulative GPA and credits, your target GPA, and how many credits you have left, and it calculates the average GPA you'd need across those remaining credits to hit that target.
